Biotechnology and patents

6 points + 12 weeks + 12 hours per week including lecture material, audio tapes, journal tapes, on-line conferences and email, multiple choice questions, short-answer questions and essays + off campus distributed learning + Year 2, First semester

Synopsis: This unit provides a comprehensive study of the legal and practical issues relating to the protection of biotechnology-derived intellectual property. The requirements for patentability including the issue of what subject matter is actually patentable, novelty requirements, inventiveness and utility will be covered. Topics relating to the requirement for exemplification of the claimed invention and types of applications and filing strategies - both National and International - will also be studied along with presentations covering the pertinent issues relating to technology transfer and commercialisation considerations.

Assessment: Written assignments:20% + Preparation and submission of a journal:30% + Written theory exam:50%
