GBL4001Introduction to biotechnology(MED)
Dr Andrew Davidson 6 points + 12 weeks + 12 hours study per week including lecture material, audio tapes, journal notes, on-line conferences and email, multiple choice questions, short-answer questions and essays + off campus distributed learning + Year 1, First semester Synopsis: This unit provides a comprehensive introduction to recombinant DNA technology, the basis of biotechnology. This includes a study of basic genetics and gene cloning, and the isolation and identification of separate genes. There will also be specialist presentations on cloning vectors. Topics concerning hybridization and labelling of probes and Southern, Northern and Western hybridizations and the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) will be covered in detail. The unit will also cover gene expression systems (including prokaryotic expression systems and eukaryotic expression systems) and new approaches to DNA sequencing. Assessment: Two written assignments (1,000 words):40% + Preparation and submission of workbook:30% + Written theory exam:30% |
