Synopsis: The subject will focus on a close reading of a major novel (Zola's *Nana*) and discussion of selected paintings and writings from social history. Topics examined will include images of the prostitute, the policing of sexuality, the figure of the *femme fatale*, gender and social class.

Assessment: Class presentation (1500 words): 25% + Essay (2000 words): 45% + *Explication de texte*: 30%
