ESC3212Volcanology and geochemistry(SCI)
Professor Ray Cas and Dr Ian Nicholls 6 points + Second Semester + Clayton + Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical class per week, and one 2-day field excursion + Prerequisites: ESC2011, ESC2022 or permission of Head of Department + Prohibition: ESC3111 Synopsis: This subject consists of two units that will be presented consecutively; both are compulsory. (1) Physical volcanology: will address volcanic eruption styles and processes, and the variety and characteristics of eruption products. (2) Geochemistry of igneous rocks: will emphasise the principles of major element, trace element and fundamental radiogenic isotope geochemistry; and apply them to the geochemistry of the Earth's mantle and crust within the various global tectonic environments and of silicate magmas generated by partial melting within them. Assessment: Two 2-hour examinations (4 hours): 60% + Practical work: 30% + Fieldwork: 10% |
