ESC3211Sedimentation and magmatism in crustal evolution 1(SCI)
Professor Ray Cas and Dr Ian Nicholls 6 points + First Semester + Clayton + Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical class per week, and two 1-day field excursions + Prerequisites: ESC2011, ESC2022 or permission of Head of Department Synopsis: This subject consists of two units which will be presented consecutively; both are compulsory. (1) Sedimentation: will comprise material concerning the roles of climate, tectonics and volcanism in sediment generation (2) Magmatism: will include material concerning the nature of the Earth's interior, its melting to form magmas and the emplacement of these magamas to form a range of igneous rock types. Assessment: Two 2-hour examinations (4 hours): 60% + Practical work: 30% + Fieldwork: 10% |
