ENH2710Orientations: Reading Asia(ART)
Robin Gerster 6 points + 2 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in English or permission + Prohibition: ENH3710 Synopsis: This subject's focus on the East/West nexus is realised through a three-part structure. The first part of the course examines intertextual and intracultural exchanges in Anglo/Indian fiction. Part Two looks at 'inside' and 'outside' views of Japan. Part Three explores ambivalent Australian attitudes to this nation's Asian neighbours, paying special attention to the development of Australian discourses of Orientalism in both literature and the media. Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 40% + Class test (1.5 hours): 30% + Seminar paper (1000 words) and participation: 30% |
