Effective Writing 1: Academic Writing

6 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Clayton, Caulfield + Prohibitions: ENH1240

Synopsis: Students should improve the effectiveness of their writing for academic purposes by analysing and practising the relevant skills. A series of written projects will be revised, discussed and rewritten over several weeks, with the emphasis being on students making their own interventions through shared activities. The cultural and institutional contexts of academic writing will be analysed, and academic publishing. Content, organisation, structure, vocabulary, register, objectivity, voice, style and presentation will be explored and the conventions of academic writing presented in terms of aiding communication between members of a distinct discourse community.

Assessment: Essay (2000 words): 35% + Workshop project (1000 words): 20% + Editing exercise: 15% + Folio presentation: 30%
