EDF5462Methods and practice of teaching biology A(EDU) Proposed to be offered next in 2002 Ms A Berry 6 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Clayton (on-campus) + Prerequisites: Bachelor of Science or Applied Science with a major study in biology. Synopsis: This unit prepares students to teach Biology in secondary schools both as a specialist VCE (Yrs 11&12) unit and within the general science curriculum (years 7 -10). The teaching approach in this unit focuses on the development of conceptual understanding in Biology through the selection of learning experiences and contexts that take into account the interests, knowledge, understanding, abilities and experiences of learners. Students will be expected to develop the ability to evaluate and reflect on the adequacy of their own understanding of biology concepts and as a result to make informed decisions about teaching approaches which can effectively promote desired learning outcomes. Assessment: Assessment: Assignments: 35%, Class presentation: 35%, Class participation: 30% + Students must complete at least 45 days teaching practice (50 for Double Degree students) and gain a rating of satisfactory for teaching practice + Student participation in on-campus workshops is vital and therefore has an 80% attendance requirement for this unit + Students will be expected to participate in a residential camp in March. |
