EDF5448Methods and practice of teaching English as a second language (ESL) A(EDU) Proposed to be offered next in 2002 Ms Jill Brown 6 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequsites: a sub-major in a language other than English or Linguistics, or one part of each Synopsis: This unit is an introduction to the practical application of current theories of language acquisition to the teaching of English as a second language in Years 7 to 12 in a variety of different contexts, ranging from intensive on-arrival language centres to similar needs mainstream classes. Students learn to assess the language needs of English as a second language (ESL) learners and use a variety of different approaches to develop their own materials and teaching activities to meet the diverse language, cultural and educational needs of ESL learners. Assessment: Class profile (2000 words) 20% + Case Study (2000 words) 20% + Class Participation 10% + Teaching practice forms a major part of the assessment for this unit. The two assessment tasks are completed in conjunction with the teaching practicum + An 80% attendance rate is required in order for students to participate fully in workshop activities. |
