Methods and practice of teaching media studies A

12 points + Full-year + Gippsland (distance) + 12 hours per week + Prerequisites: At least 36 credit points in Media Studies + Mass Communications, Popular Culture, Film Theory, or similar field of study at tertiary level

Synopsis: This subject introduces teaching skills and methods in the study of media, for Education students who intend to teach in secondary schools. The content will include an examination of contemporary issues in the Australian media; and the ways these issues can be introduced into the secondary school curriculum. The study of the media forms such as the press, film, television and photography, and the processes of distribution such as publishing, broadcasting and electronic information systems will be the focus. The interpretation of construction of media products will be an important aspect which students will be required to demonstrate as part of their analysis of the issues and technologies.

Assessment: Assignment 1 (experience of the Australian media - 1000 words): 20% + Assignment 2 (coursework study guide exercises - 2000 words, or 500 words per study guide): 35% + Assignment 3 (curriculum design - 3000 words or equivalent): 45% + Hurdle requirement: Successful completion of the practicum
