Synopsis: Experiences, mechanisms and structures which shape people0s perceptions of popular culture. How peer groups, gang membership and special interest groups influence and interpret the culture. How popular culture is shaped by various media, communication technology and cultural and social organisations. Power relationships relating to race, stereotyping and gender and their impact on popular culture.

Assessment: Research assignment (2000 words): 70% + Seminar paper and presentation (1500 words): 30%
