Applied microeconomics

6 points + Lectures and seminar: 3 hours per week + First semester + Caulfield + Prerequisites: An undergraduate degree with a major in economics, econometrics or finance; or a Graduate Diploma in Economic Studies or a Graduate Diploma in Applied Economics (via Distance Education) or its equivalent.

Synopsis: Australia, especially Victoria, has been in the forefront of microeconomic reform. This subject focuses on that experience: structural shifts in demand and production costs; the nature of imperfect markets; how, when and why markets fail; the roles of government in a deregulated environment; the role of competitive strategies and game theory; the experience of special markets, for example energy. Professionals in domestic and international organisations will find this subject an aid to the formulation of strategies.

Assessment: Written (4000-word research report): 40% + Tutorial presentation: 10% + Examination (3 hours): 50%
