Synopsis: Analog modulation: Amplitude modulation; double-sideband suppressed-carrier modulation; single-sideband modulation; phase modulation and frequency modulation. Signal transmission and filtering: Signal distortion in transmission; standard lowpass and bandpass characteristics; pulse shaping filters. Introduction to random processes and noise: Description of random processes; shot noise and thermal noise; detection in the presence of noise. Digital transmission: baseband digital data transmission, sampling, quantisation and time-division multiplexing. Communication systems: AM and FM radio and TV signal formats; optical fibre transmission; communication system design principles.

Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 90% + Laboratory and assignment work: 10%
