Synopsis: This unit is project-based and introduces mechatronic design. Fundamental mechanical and electronic/electric design concepts are covered. The multidisciplinary nature of engineering design is considered including methodologies and conceptual approaches, resource allocation and project management as applied to the engineering design. The approach encourages the use of appropriate technologies such as computer-aided design, project planning and management tools. Students work in small groups on the design project.

Assessment: Continuous assessment by weekly oral reports, augmented by written short submissions and one major assignment: 40% + Final presentation, demonstration and full written report on project: 60%
