Imperialism and development in Asia

6 points + Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week + First or second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: any two of ECC1000, ECC1100, ECC1510, or equivalent + Prohibition: ECC3500 or ECC3504

Synopsis: The economic impact of British rule in India since the early nineteenth century, with some broad references to other regions, where useful. Themes include the history of famine; caste, religion and economic development; modern and traditional entrepreneurship; economic exploitation; destruction of handicrafts; the impact of international capitalism; agricultural growth and economic diversification.

Assessment: Written (3000-word essay): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 60%
