Dr Ross Booth 6 points + 3 contact hours per week + Second semester (on campus, Clayton) + Prerequisite: ECC1000 or equivalent Synopsis: This subject will examine the economic importance of sport, demand for sport and sports participation. Supply of sport by government, the commercial and voluntary sectors. Sports sponsorship, major sports events, stadium financing and sports broadcasting. Economics of professional team sports, sports league as cartels,the 'uncertainty of outcome'hypothesis, cross-subsidisation through revenue sharing and player drafts and salary caps, the impact of television, the Internet and globalisation, the effect of competition policy in Australia, North America and Europe. Assessment: Class presentation: 10% + Mid-semester test: 20% + Examination (2 hours): 70% |
