CHM3931Medicinal chemistry(SCI)
Dr Peter Junk 6 points + Two 1-hour lectures, one 1-hour tutorial and the equivalent of 3 hours of laboratory activity per week + First Semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: 12 points of level 1 chemistry and normally 12 points of level 2 chemistry. Students without 12 points of level 2 chemistry should consult the coordinator + Prohibitions: Students who have completed CHM3031, CHM3042, CHM3051 or CHM3062 must consult the coordinator Synopsis: This subject focuses on several major classes of biologically and clinically important therapeutic agents. Students will study the traditional use, isolation, structural characterisation, sythesis and clinical evaluation of drugs and also be exposed to newer crystallographic, computational, combinatorial and screening methodology used in drug design and development. The subject will consist of three inter-related sections: a) drug discovery and development, b) molecular recognition and c) combinatorial chemistry and the synthesis of biological polymers. Where appropriate, guest speakers from industry and government agencies will contribute to the subject. Assessment: One 2.5 hour examination: 60% + Seminar/ Asssignments: 10% + Laboratory work and short laboratory reports: 30% |
