CHM3922Understanding chemical reactions(SCI)
Dr Peter Junk 6 points + Two 1-hour lectures, one 1-hour tutorial and the equivalent of 3 hours of laboratory activity per week + Second Semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: 12 points of level 1 chemistry and normally 12 points of level 2 chemistry. Students without 12 points of level 2 chemistry should consult the coordinator + Prohibitions: Students who have completed CHM3031, CHM3042, CHM3051 or CHM3062 must consult the coordinator Synopsis: A general description of the tools and methodology that are used in the determination of reaction mechanisms will be provided. This knowledge will then be used to elucidate the reaction mechanisms of common organic reactions, metal centred and metal mediated reactions and some gas phase reactions and applied in the understanding of various "real-world" catalytic systems, eg industrial organic processes, biological catalysis by enzymes, ozone destruction by CFC's. The subject further seeks to provide students with generic skills (presentations skills, report writing, CV construction, job interviews) which will assist them in their future employment or further studies. Assessment: One 2-hour examination: 50% + Assignments: 10% + Written and oral presentations: 10% + Laboratory work and short laboratory reports: 30% |
