(SCI)

Dr Andrea Robinson

6 points + Three 1-hour lectures/tutorials and an average of 3-hours laboratory activity per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: CHM1011 or CHM1022 or CHM1031 or CHM1042 or equivalent, or BMS1011 + Prohibitions: related aspects of CHM2022, CHM2132, unit 313 in pre-2000 3rd-year chemistry, Those students who have already completed parts of CHM2022 and CHM2132 must consult the year coordinator

Synopsis: The subject describes the structure, properties and synthesis of biomaterials, macromolecules, and "Smart" inorganic materials which are designed to carry out a range of sensing or active functions. Includes: materials produced by plants and animals such as collagen, bone, cellulose and membranes; properties of everyday materials such as polypropylene and polyurethane and the link between properties, structure and synthesis. It also examines the structure of ceramics and glasses. Some of the lecture material will also be available via computer based modules and quizzes, allowing students to progress at an individual pace through some segments of the course.
