Molecular analysis and applications

6 points + Second semester + 39 lectures and 39 hours of practical work + Gippsland + Prerequisites: 12 points of 1st year chemistry + Prohibitions: GAS2282, CHM2647

Synopsis: Students are introduced to principles of quantitative chemical analysis. The subject involves several methods of titrimetric and electrical methods of analysis including automation. This includes polarography, various flow methods of analysis, selective ion electrodes, and method verification procedures. Quality control and chemical recovery (best environmental practice) in two major international industries are included as case studies ie paper and petroleum. The subject is taught on campus by lectures and practical activities. For distance education students, detailed study guides are provided and a five-day vacation school applies for tutorials and practical laboratory work.

Assessment: Examination: 45% + Assignment: 30% + Ten practical reports throughout the semester: 25% + A pass in both theory and practical work is mandatory to pass the subject
