CEL3011Cell biology 2(SCI)
Professor John Bertram 6 points + First semester + Clayton + Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical class per week + Prerequisites: CEL2012 Synopsis: The relationship between molecular structure, organisation of cellular organelles and dynamic cellular processes will be emphasized. Topics will include endocytotic and secretory pathways, organelle inheritance, the cytoskeleton, cell division and cycle, regulation of membrane dynamics, the establishment and maintenance of epithelial layers and cell adhesion. Specific cases will be used to illustrate how disorders arise from abnormalities in normal cellular functions. Emphasis will be placed on the biology of a number of specialized (differentiated) cell types to emphasize the uniformity between cells. Finally, skills will be developed searching the literature and essay writing. Assessment: Written examination: 45% + Assignment: 20% + Continuous assessment: 15% + Laboratory work: 20% |
