Nutrition across the lifespan

(MED)

6 points + 3 hours per week (lectures and tutorials) + 3 hours practical classes + 6 hours private study + First Semester + Prerequisites: Completion of Years 1 and 2, Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics or its equivalent

Synopsis: Students will gain a basic understanding of the nutritional requirements of normal healthy men and women over the entire lifespan. Emphasis will be placed on use of recommended dietary intakes to identify subgroups at greatest risk for dietary nutrient inadequacy or excess and the development and use of different dietary recommendations. In addition to normal nutritional requirements they will examine the effects of an inadequate diet. This will include development of food choice, childhood diet in the prevention of chronic disease, prevention of obesity and dental cares, dietary treatment of people with illness, body image and an analysis of some popular diets.

Assessment: Examination: 40% + Tutorial discussion: 10% + Essay: 30% + Practical reports: 20%
