Diet related chronic disease and preventive medicine

(MED)

6 points + 3 hours per week (lectures and tutorials) + 9 hours private study + First Semester + Prerequisites: Completion of Years 1 and 2, Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics or its equivalent

Synopsis: In this subject the student will gain an integrated understanding of the role of diet in the aetiology, prevention and management of the major life style related diseases in Australia. The subject encompasses the roles of energy intake, dietary composition, body fat distribution, and the roles of antioxidants in diabetes and cardiovascular disease, sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium in hypertension and the risk factors for cancer. Preventive strategies using a population, community and individual approach will be learned and discussed for effectiveness. Evidence based epidemiology will be critically examined to more fully understand the current treatment modalities.

Assessment: Examination: 50% + Essay: 30% + Class presentation: 20%
