Principles and practices of heritage management

8 points + 2-hour seminar per week + Fieldwork excursions + First semester + Clayton

Synopsis: Basic principles of heritage identification and conservation as developed by international agencies such as UNESCO and ICOMOS, especially the Burra Charter and relevant national state and local heritage legislation. Different meanings of /heritage0 and its various forms. The significance of World Heritage listing and national, state and local government planning provisions. Common approaches to the identification and management of heritage across a variety of professional and disciplinary contexts including the built environment, landscapes, material culture and museum collections, archival collections and indigenous culture.

Assessment: Seminar presentation (1500 words): 25% + Fieldwork report exercise (1000 words): 20% + Essay (3000 words): 50% + Examination (500 words): 5%
