ASC1717Introduction to viticultural science(BUS)
Dr Mary Cole 6 points + Second semester + Block mode requiring attendance at two 3-day workshops (compulsory for all students) + Peninsula/Distance + Background in chemistry and mathematics is recommended Synopsis: This subject covers the areas of grapewine physiology and soil science to provide the necessary conceptual background for the study of viticulture. Grapevine physiology covers grapevine varieties; vine structure and physiological processes; reproduction and growth cycles and their relationship to the production process. The influence of environmental factors including disease agents on grape and wine production are discussed. Soil science covers soil classification; the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils; soil modification; and environmental management problems facing the vigneron. Assessment: Written examinations (2 x 90 min): 50% + Written assignment (3000 words): 20% + Field/laboratory work: 30% |
