Introduction to anatomy and cell biology research

6 points + Second semester + Clayton + One 1-hour lecture and one 5-hour practical class per week + Prerequisites: A distinction average in a second year biomedical major. A distinction in at least 6 points taught by the Department of Anatomy. 48 points at first year level, 48 points at second year level

Synopsis: This subject will introduce students to modern cell and developmental biology research by allowing them to do a minor research project in the Department of Anatomy. This project will involve a minimum of 5 hours research per week. A lecture program of 1 hour per week will allow students to become familiar with major relevant topics including; defining and testing hypotheses, data analysis, critically reviewing literature, animal ethics, small animal experimental procedures, research funding, research careers and laboratory safety. Students will also develop skills in the oral and written presentation of their own data.

Assessment: Written paper: 20% + Research report: 50% + Oral presentation: 10% + Journal club presentations: 20%
