The
Postgraduate Diploma of Education (TESOL-International) is an Australian-based
course at Clayton Campus. It is designed to accommodate both teachers and
novices and aims to develop these candidates' understanding of the theory and
practice of teaching English as a foreign or second, international language in
a range of contexts (elementary, secondary, tertiary and workplace). Cohorts
may also take the course in flexible mode. It differs from the Postgraduate
Diploma of Education (TESOL) in that it does not require the Advanced practicum
in language teaching (EDF6238) to be taken as a core subject. Additionally, it
permits students to take a subject directly focused on developing English
language proficiency (if available). The entry requirements regarding English
language proficiency also differ.
This course would best suit the needs of teachers or prospective teachers from
overseas who are four-year qualified (approved by the Faculty) and who do not
wish to teach in Australia. For local students who do wish to have the option
of also teaching in Australia, it would be an alternative to the Postgraduate
Diploma of Education (TESOL) if the Advanced practicum (with field placement)
were taken and the applicant were deemed already qualified as a teacher (as per
local requirements). For such applicants it would offer the additional benefit
of a greater focus on the needs of teachers of English as a foreign language.
