This course, jointly offered by the Department of Psychological Medicine and the Faculty of Education, is directed towards members of the teaching profession and other related professions who work with children in school settings and who wish to improve their understanding of mental health issues, particularly the environmental, social and emotional factors which influence the mental development of children and adolescents. The course also provides practical information on how to use this theoretical understanding productively in classroom and school settings. The course acknowledges and supports the central role of the teacher in the development of optimum mental health in the school population.
The course is available both on-campus and through distance education. It is conducted part-time for one year and comprises the following two compulsory subjects:
Assessment is by written assignments based on coursework and class discussions. Students are assessed with a pass grade only.
