Areas of research specialisation include media studies, history and theory of mass media, literature of exile; applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, German for special purposes, discourse and text analysis; Romanticism, feminine theory, drama and theatre studies, literature and the environment; contemporary German literature, sociology of literature, aesthetics; the grotesque satire, B. Brecht, literary theory; medieval and baroque studies, comparative literature, poetics, rhetoric and in cultural studies; travel literature, European cinema, literature of the fantastique.

The
pass degree of BA with results at least at credit level in the third part of a
major sequence in German studies.
As per faculty policy, students who have completed fourth-year-level subjects
in German studies with results of at least credit level may be granted credit
for a maximum of 24 points.
The program has two streams: German literary studies, and German linguistics. Candidates must complete a total of 48 points.

With the permission of
the department, students may choose a relevant subject from cognate departments
or centres.
With the permission of the department, masters qualifying students may complete
a part of their program at a university in a German-speaking country. Students
intending to do this are required to make early arrangements with the department.
All graduate students are strongly encouraged to conduct a part of their studies in a German-speaking country. The department will assist in obtaining scholarships and has made arrangements with German universities enabling students to continue their courses under supervision and with a maximum of assistance.
