Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Business and Commerce


General information

Aims

This course has been designed to prepare students to work at a professional level in a scientifically oriented environment in which application of modern business techniques is required, or in a commercial environment in which a background in science and technology is desirable.
The course is primarily directed towards intending students whose career goals are in line with the above objectives and who combine ability with high motivation.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement to the course is satisfactory completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education or equivalent with a study score of at least 25 in English.
Students who have completed the first year of the normal Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Business at the university with good academic results may be admitted to the second year of the double degree with full credit for appropriate first-year studies.

Course structure

This double degree program can normally be completed by part-time distance education in eight years, with variation to suit individual circumstances, or in a shorter period if granted credit for previous studies. A total credit value of at least 192 points must be completed as follows:

Science units

Science units with a total credit value of at 90 points, including:
(a) two six-point core units:

(b) two science discipline sequences (excluding computing) consisting of:
(i) 12 + 18 + 24 or 12 + 12 + 24 or 12 + 18 + 18 points in one discipline area across levels one, two and three respectively, and
(ii) 24 points in a second discipline area, including at least 12 points from levels two and three
(c ) one six-point first-level science unit from a discipline area other than those studied under part (b).

Business and Economics units

Business and Economics units with a total credit value of at least 102 points, including:
(a) five introductory six-point units, one in each of the following business disciplines:

(The Bachelor of Business and Commerce complusory business mathematics and statistics unit is covered by the MTH1210 requirement.)
(b) a business major of at least 48 points (eight units), including at least 12 points at each of second and third levels (one core unit from part (a) may form part of the 48 points requirement)
(c ) completion of at least 48 points of business units beyond first level, including at least 24 points at third level (the business major sequence meets part of this requirement).

Credits/exemptions for previous study

Appropriate credits may be granted for approved studies completed at a
recognised post-secondary institution. It is advisable that intending applicants seek advice from both the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Completed applications are to be forwarded to the Faculty of Science, Gippsland, by 22 September 2000 to be considered for a first-round offer. Later applications will be accepted (subject to quota limitations).
