Synopsis: This subject introduces key debates in the theory and practice of feminist cross-cultural research, including the range of issues raised by the challenges posed to white Western feminism primarily by women of colour, Third World and indigenous women, and women from other non-Western groups. Issues to be examined include the power relations underlying and determining the research process; cultural biases inherent in the production of knowledge; ethical issues in research; negotiating cultural difference in cross-cultural research; and the degree to which feminist methodologies are able to bridge these differences.
