From Film Theory to Video Practice

8 points + 3 hours per week + Second Semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: A sub-major in Visual culture, specialising in Film and television, and including VSA2190 or permission + Corequisites: completion of a major in Visual Culture or Performing Arts, or with the permission

Synopsis: Subject is designed to complement existing theoretical, critical and historical subjects in Film and T.V. Course culminates in groups producing videos as part of their assessment, and focuses on planning a production, its aims and how to bring them about. Time is devoted to looking at a range of videos/short films in order to think through a production's rationale and theoretical relevance. Students are expected to attain a basic competence in most aspects of video filming, together with a knowledge of operating computer-based digital video-editing systems. Students will be given a clear time frame for shooting and editing their final group videos, as amount of equipment is limited.

Assessment: An equipment proficiency test: 10% + An individually produced short script and/or a story board for a proposed production (2000 words): 35% + A film journal (1200 words): 20% + Assessment of the role a student plays in a group production: 35%
