8 points + 3 hours per week + First semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: two visual culture subjects at first-year level

Synopsis: Culture, movements and ideology in Australian architecture since first European settlement. Emulation of metropolitan forms in Britain, Europe and America; articulation of national regional and landscape identity in our architecture from late 19th century on Greenway and Blackburn through Murcutt, Denton Corker Marshall and Katsalidis, from Horbury Hunt and Federation architecture through to recent work of Edmond and Corrigan. Australia's engagement with modernism and postmodernism through its buildings- Grounds, Romberg, Everett, Seidler,Utzon and contemporaries, and a detailed study of exception figures. Radical, conservative, colonial, corporate and urban positions examined throughout.

Assessment: Written (5000 words): 75% + Visual test (1 hour): 25%
