Synopsis: The post-war German cinema, especially of the 1980s and 1990s. The relationship between film culture and the state with reference to issues revolving around the construction of /national identity0 and to theoretical proposals which have sought to establish links between the collective psyche and national film produce. The impact of unification on German film culture. Film-making practices in the ex-GDR. The representation of unification and German-German relations in contemporary film.

Assessment: Two essays (3000 words each): 70% + Class paper: 10% + Examination (1 hour): 20%
