Synopsis: An introduction to some of the skills and methods necessary for advanced studies in art history and theory. Preliminary discussion will cover fundamental issues such as style, iconography and the relation between art and ideology. Seminars will then focus on a range of applications including various types of art writing, the production of catalogues, conservation and technical examination, research methods, and relevant new technologies. Wherever possible, emphasis will be given to issues and approaches directly relevant to students' own research and interests in the field.

Assessment: Essay (2500 words): 25% + Exercise (2500 words): 25% + Essay (4000 words): 50%
