Synopsis: (i) Language: A review of Ukrainian grammar; development of conversation and composition skills using texts on contemporary themes. (ii) Literature and society: An introduction to major cultural, social and political developments in Ukraine in the nineteenth century; the study of selected literary texts from Kotliarevs0kyi to Franko.
Assessment: Examinations (2 hours): 25% + Language weekly homework: 25% + Two 10-minute tutorial papers: 10% + Test (30 minutes): 10% + Literature and society essay (1500 words): 20% + Tutorial paper (500 words): 10%
