Synopsis: Internal architecture of a typical microprocessor CPU. The instruction set and programming techniques as related to the hardware resources of the microprocessor. The structure and use of memory including RAM and ROM. Input and output operation in parallel and serial modes. Direct memory access controllers for fast data transfer. Interrupt controllers and their application in conjunction with interrupt priority control. Data communication standards and techniques such as current loop interface, RS232 and IEEE488. Error detection and correction.

Assessment: Class tests: 60% + Tutorial work/laboratory work: 40%
