Synopsis: Introduction to hydraulics, pneumatics and electronics used in automation; actuators, sensors and logic elements; digital electronics and microprocessors, control technology, interface components and systems, use of computers in automation, use of PLCs. Introduction to automated materials handling and robotics. Direct and reverse kinematics for object manipulation and control of robots and automated systems. Mechanisation of parts handling, parts feeding and transfer, automated production and assembly; flow line, group technology, flexible manufacturing systems.

Assessment: Examination (3 hours ): 70% + Tests and assignments: 30%
