Art and Culture of Paris

6 points + Second semester + Caulfield + 104 hours of lectures, tutorials and siter visits on location in Europe, and 52 hours of independent study + Prerequisites: TAD1101, TAD1102 + Substantial travel and accommodation costs

Synopsis: The course will trace the development of visual culture of Europe from Roman times to the present day, using the city of Paris as the focal point. Particular emphasis will be placed on four expecially significant periods: the Gothic, Baroque and Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. A major thematic focus will be the exploration of the combination of ideas, values and beliefs via the tangible visual evidence of art, architecture, and urban fabric. The course will concentrate on the cultural development of Paris. This city offers an ideal base from which to study significant cultural developments of Europe.

Assessment: Two essays (1250 words each): 50% + Research book (2000 words): 50%
