Synopsis: A survey of the different forms of literary production in Spanish America from the early years of independent life into the twentieth century. Romanticism and its influence on Spanish American thought and literary production. Origins of the Hispanic American novel of dictatorship. Hispanic American drama in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Assessment: Two take-home exams (20% each): 40% + Reading controls: 20% + Final essay (3000 words): 40%
