Synopsis: This subject provides students with an appreciation and understanding of the physical principles underpinning modern medical imaging modalities. Concepts include atomic and solid state structure; interaction of radiation with matter; x-ray generation and detection; planar radiography and digital fluoroscopy; computed tomography; nuclear imaging (SPECT and PET); spin imaging (MRI); ultrasound; image processing and image reconstruction; image compression and transmission; radiation dosimetry and safety

Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 60% + Tutorial activities: 15% + Laboratory exercises: 25%
