Photography as evidence: constructing the documentary image

3 points + 6 hours per week including 2 hours of lecture/tutorials/workshops and 4 independent study hours + First semester + Caulfield and Gippsland + Prerequisite: any level 1 photomedia or photography subject + Corequisite: None + Prohibitions: None + Elective for BVA, BFA, BDes, BDes(VC) and other courses which give permission

Synopsis: Within the context of a fine art practice students will be introduced to a range of approaches to constructing the documentary image. They will analyse contemporary and historical images and will develop a practical and conceptual framework for their own documentary practice. The role of photomedia as a constructor of evidence or truth will be explored. Biography, autobiography, history, language and memory will be considered within the context of photomedia. Through participating in a program of lectures, tutorials and workshops students will develop their understanding of core subjects of the field, whilst extending skills and knowledge acquired in level 1.

Assessment: Major self-determined project(60%), set projects (20%) to be assessed in week 6, journal (10%) and participation (10%).
