Photography as matter: silver, gelatin, glass and paper

3 points + 6 hours per week comprising 2 hours of lectures, tutorials and/or workshops and 4 hours independent study + Second semester + Caulfield and Gippsland + Prerequisite: any level 1 photomedia or photography subject + Corequisite: None + Prohibtions: None + Elective for BVA, BFA, BDes(VC), and other courses which give permission

Synopsis: Within the context of a visual art practice students will be introduced to a range of alternative ways of constructing the photographic image, with an emphasis on the material nature of the medium, alternative processes, and the possibilities these methods contain. They will be involved in the analyisi of contemporary and historical photographic images and will move towards developing a personal conceptual framework. The materiality of subjstances used to produce photographic images will be explored and a range of alternative processes introduced including cyanotype, liquid light and gun bichromate.

Assessment: Major self-determined project (60%), set projects (20%), journal (10%) and participation (10%).
