Synopsis: The formal and informal relationship between police, parliament and cabinet and between police commissioners and police ministers. The effectiveness of government-initiated police inquiries such as the Fitzgerald Commission and the Wood Commission. Contemporary social issues including police-community relations. Police relationships with youth, the media, political parties and interest groups. The policing of industrial conflict. Police and racial conflict.

Assessment: Major essay (3000 words): 30% + Tutorial presentation and participation : 15% + Test (1 hour): 15% + Exam: 40%
