Synopsis: Theories and models of organisational function and change. Modern police management theory and principles of effective police service. Natures and styles of policing. Problems faced by the police officer in enforcing the law, maintaining order and providing services to the community. Individual and organisational police discretion. Effects of police occupational culture. New models of police structures and policing strategies.

Assessment: Essay (2500 words): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 40% + Class presentation: 10% Tutorial attendance and participation: 10%
