Analytical and compositional techniques II

4 points + 2 hours per week + Second semester + Clayton + Prerequisites: MUS2110, MUS1100/1110, or MUS1010/1020

Synopsis: The subject covers traditional counterpoint, Schenkerian analysis and the twelve-tone system developed by Arnold Schoenberg. Students learn to compose contrapuntal and atonal music, and examine the multi-layered harmonic structure of tonal music.

Assessment: Twelve-tone composition: 20% + Counterpoint exercise: 10% + Exercises in Schenkerian analysis: 20% + Aural training test: 10% + Examination (2 hours): 40%
