Synopsis: Experimental errors. Measurement and frequency distribution. Mean, mode and standard deviation. Standard deviation of the mean. Probability distributions. Linear and multiple regression. Correlation. Confidence levels. t tests. Covariance. Non-parametric statistics. Experimental design. Laboratory experiments using measurements requiring application of elementary statistical techniques. Laboratory experiments introducing techniques fundamental to materials characterisation, including metallographic preparation and examination of microstructures.
