Synopsis: Epidemiology of the major diet-disease interrelationships covering energy intake and dietary composition on energy balance and obesity development. Importance of body fat distribution as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes and CVD. Role of dietary composition in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. Diet and the 'insulin resistance syndrome' and its role as a risk factor diabetes and CVD. Role of dietary composition in modulating the risk of CVD. The mechanisms by which diet can modulate the risk of colon cancer. Current practices of dietary management of obesity, diabetes, and CVD. The role of diet in the prevention of these diseases, with emphasis on popular-based approaches.
