Cardiovascular epidemiology and prevention

Synopsis: This course will take the principles of basic epidemiology and apply them to the relevant cardiovascular disease states e.g. hypertension, artherosclerosis. The major risk factors for development of artherosclerosis will be discussed in particular hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolaemia and cigarette smoking. In addition the genetics of development of these disease processors will be studied. The latest risk factors will also be investigated including pro-oxidant stress and elevated homocysteine. Therapies to beneficially interact with these risk factors will be discussed in detail both pharmacological and non-pharmacological.
