Synopsis: Contemporary international issues are examined, with emphasis on the continuing dominance of economic issues but noting the rise in cultural and religious tensions and the search for new concepts of security. The phenomenon of 'failed societies' and the response of the United States as the sole surviving superpower of international problems in the post-Cold War era provide a theme.
